Sean from the UK joins Rohan and Phil where we discuss a breaking firmware update issued by TP-Link for their Wifi smart switches, and how Sean uses ZoneMinder in his smart home for security.

The Cloud Strikes Again

Pat Rooney (@Sota) reached out to us on #podcast room in the Home Assistant Discord. It looks like a new firmware update which is rolling out to TP Link smart switches is breaking compatibility with Home Assistant. This appears to be also affecting the energy monitoring of the HS-110 WiFi switches. There’s a thread on the Home Assistant forums you can read up about it. Looks like it might possibly be restricted to UK versions only, but best to block these devices from accessing the internet before they auto-update their firmware. MrMandrake on the Home Assistant community forums got a reply from TP Link which mentions
We were aware that there were some security vulnerability on the previous firmware, some thrid parties might take advantage of the vulnerability to manage the plug.To avoid the potential attacks and security risks cuasing by this, we have released a new firmware version 1.1.0 to fix it. That should be the reason why you found some funstionalities on the thrid party smart hub is not working.
